Ideal For

This course is ideal for students interested in music, gaming, or sound design who want to understand how music works in video games. No prior experience is required, though basic familiarity with music or production tools is helpful. It is suitable for beginners as well as more advanced students looking to explore interactive audio and game development.

No prior experience needed. 

Bring With You

  • Bring your own laptop (PC or Mac) with minimum 3 GB to 6GB free hard drive space minimum
  • Bring your own headphones, they’re a must have!  
  • Having your own DAW: Protools, Reaper, Logic X, Cubebase will be beneficial.

What You'll Learn

Foundations of Game Music

  • Explore how music shapes emotion, gameplay, and storytelling
  • Introduction to adaptive music in video games
  • Learn basic DAW, MIDI, and sound engine concepts

weeks 3-4

Composition & Sound Design

  • Develop themes, motifs, and musical structure
  • Learn MIDI orchestration and arranging techniques
  • Use orchestral VSTs, effects, and sound design tools

weeks 5-6

Interactive Music Systems

  • Introduction to Wwise and interactive music middleware
  • Build dynamic music systems using states, switches, and parameters
  • Create transitions, layering, and system-based music behavior

04

weeks 7-8

Implementation in Unreal Engine 5

  • Import and implement music systems into Unreal Engine 5
  • Test, troubleshoot, and refine interactive audio systems
  • Build a final playable demo featuring an adaptive music system

Game & Film Scoring Instructor

Johnny Lucas is a professional composer and AAA game audio designer with over 25 years of experience as a musician and nearly a decade at Ubisoft Toronto. He specializes in helping students turn their passion for music into immersive, interactive video game soundtracks using real-world industry tools and techniques.

Having contributed to major titles like Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Watch Dogs: Legion, The Division, Splinter Cell, and the Far Cry series, Johnny brings firsthand game development experience into every lesson. His teaching covers composition, production, orchestration, mixing, and even in-game implementation, all in a fun, hands-on environment.

Johnny will help students unlock their full create potential, enabling them to make professional-quality music inspired by today’s blockbuster video games.
